Connie: While working in New York City, I earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from NYU. I had an opportunity to speak with a classmate one evening who, like me, was also working while getting her graduate degree. She had such wonderful things to say about the field of Human Resources and how rewarding it had been for her that I enrolled in my first Human Resources class the very next semester. And as they say, “the rest is history!”
Last week was your 3 year anniversary with us at Helios HR, Happy Anniversary! Can you tell us a little bit about what attracted you to Helios?
Connie: Throughout my career, I have had multiple opportunities to work for small and large organizations as an HR leader. I believe that my years of experience have placed me in a position to be able to provide value as a consultant to organizations that are seeking a strategic and impactful HR function for their business. The opportunity to work with organizations across different industries each facing their own set of challenges has been rewarding both professionally and personally for me. I am fortunate to work with a high performing team of HR professionals in a learning environment where we all benefit from each other’s areas of HR expertise at Helios.
What Helios value resonates most with you and why?
Connie: Make “big things happen” is the value that resonates the most with me. While I always strive to make big things happen for my clients, here at Helios we also strive to make an impact in our community too. Each year we participate in the annual Coat Drive for Fairfax County, in addition to many other projects and this to me is one of the differentiators that sets Helios apart.
What would you say is the top challenge today in the HR field and how do you address it?
Connie: In my opinion the top challenge facing HR professionals today is working with a multi-generational workforce. The first step to addressing it is to ensure your organization adopts a philosophy of embracing generational differences. Secondly, you need to be able to provide your management teams with the tools to help them navigate the challenges such as communicating with their multi-generational teams. These are both critical to ensuring success. In fact, Kathy Albarado wrote a blog post on the topic recently if you are interested in reading more about it.
What’s the best piece of advice anyone’s ever told you?
Connie: Early in my career one of my first managers told me that I could bring any problem I had to her…however, I also better bring a solution with it. We did not always adopt my solution, but ever since I became a manager, I have really appreciated those forward-thinking employees that bring solutions instead of just problems.
Tell us a little-known fun fact about you.
Connie: I had an opportunity in late 1995 and early 1996 to work on a Sylvester Stallone movie called Daylight. I traveled to Italy to participate in the filming and even had one line of dialogue that was filmed but alas did not make it into the movie. It was quite an experience and as a bonus, I was able to get my Screen Actors Guild card!
