| The Power of Goal Setting
According to a research tidbit in the December 30, 2007 issue of The Washington Post, only 12 percent of workers made career-related resolutions at the beginning of 2007. But for those who did, almost three-quarters actually achieved their goals! What a great testimony to the power of goal setting.
This time of year I recommend goal setting in several flavors. Sometimes the simple models work the best. Here is one: What would you like more of in 2008? Less of in 2008?
Another is “What do you need to say ‘no’ to in order to say ‘yes’ to something else?” Sometimes I use the 5-part goal setting model below:
-
State the goal (in positive terms).
-
Describe why it is important to you.
-
Identify who will help you reach the goal—your support network.
-
How will you know when you reach your goal?
-
What steps do you need to take to reach your goal?
A client recently suggested Step 6: What obstacles might keep you from reaching your goal and how will you overcome them?
Steps 3 and 4 are the magic in this model. Who can you talk to your goal about? Who will be inspired to support your efforts? Look beyond the first couple of names that come to mind, and plan to enroll your boss and your family in supporting your goal. At the same time, ask each of them what their goals are, and how you can support their dreams and gifts.
Being able to describe how it will feel to reach your goal will also help draw you toward a positive future. Step 4 allows you to describe what you will accomplish, how that will make you feel, what you will do to celebrate—anything tangible in Step 4 supports your moving into the future.
So be the minority—set goals and prepare yourself to achieve success!
