| New FMLA Amendment
A new amendment to the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was signed into law by President Bush on January 28, 2008. The new amendment provides up to 26 weeks of job-protected leave during a single 12-month period to care for an armed forces family member injured in the line of duty, including the National Guard and Reserves.
The leave can be taken for relatives undergoing medical treatment, recuperation or therapy, on outpatient status, or otherwise temporarily disabled because of a serious injury or illness. Family members include spouse, son, daughter, parent, and next of kin.
The FMLA amendments also permit a son, daughter, or parent of an armed forces member on active duty, or who has been called to active duty, to take up to 12 weeks of job-protected leave to deal with issues that arise as a result of that duty.
