Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow!

Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow!During this struggling economic recovery, an increasing number of organizations are hesitantly preparing to hire. But many wait to start recruiting until there is an official opening, increasing the chances of making a pressured hiring mistake.

What can you do now to better position yourself for a recruiting event you know is coming? Build a "pipeline". Some organizations refer to their candidate pipeline as the stage at which an active candidate currently resides, i.e. phone screen, in-person interview, background/reference check, offer stage, etc. Others refer to their candidate pipeline as the practice of anticipating and preparing for their corporate hiring needs.

The latter approach allows you to make a more informed hiring decision at the ideal time for your organization. Outlined below is how to get started:

  • Identify your organization’s professional communities of interest. Most organizations have a few positions or a particular community of professionals from which they hire repeatedly. For some organizations it could be the growing team of Software Engineers, Tax Advisors, Electronic Assemblers, Sales Professionals, or SME Consultants, to name a few.
  • Penetrate the identified communities. Once your professional community of interest has been identified, you can begin to infiltrate. Building a landscape of employment with regard to a particular skill set within a certain geographic region can take time, however, the pieces come together quicker than you might expect. Keep in mind these communities are almost finite with little constant attrition.
  • Start with competitors. Competitors usually have similarly skilled people in similar roles. Once you have identified where your professional community of interest works, identify where they professionally "hang-out". What associations are they members of, what events do they attend, what social media sites, blogs, and shared interest groups do they participate in or follow?
  • Regularly contact top prospects. When reaching out to top prospects of interest, be sure to honestly and accurately set expectations to avoid an unsatisfactory candidate experience. Ask them for their permission to regularly contact them, and then do so.
  • Document all relevant information. The most effective way to avoid covering the same ground twice is through documentation. Your pipeline is only as useful as the information you document along the way.

Overall, knowledge of the community landscape will save you time, particularly knowing already who meets and does not meet minimum qualifications. But most importantly, having already established existing relationships with top prospects allows you to make a more informed hiring decision at the ideal time for your organization.

Don't stop thinking about tomorrow's recruiting needs. Yesterday's gone.
