For instance, if 5 people leave a 20 person firm, that means a high rate of staff turnover. If 5 people leave a 10,000-person company, then that company has extraordinary staff retention practices.

For instance, say had an average of 200 employees over the year. Now, say that 6 employees leave in this time. Divided by 200, that gives us 0.03, or 3%.
What are the main types of employee turnover?
Employees can vacate a position for any number of reasons, including retirement and promotion.
But when you're analyzing the business impact of employee turnover, you'll be most interested in two types of churn:
- Voluntary turnover
- Involuntary turnover
Both of these ultimately count as turnover. However, your response to each will vary, which is why it's so important to track each employee's reason for leaving.
What is voluntary employee turnover?
Voluntary employee turnover is when a team member chooses to end their contract. Sometimes, this is because their circumstances have changed. They may plan on moving to a new city, or changing careers, or devoting more time to their family.
Employees may also voluntarily depart if they experience the right combination of push factors and pull factors. Push factors are things that push employees away: low salary, toxic culture, or lack of career growth. Pull factors are things that attract employees to other jobs, like better rewards or exciting opportunities.
What is involuntary employee turnover?
In some cases, you may choose to let an employee go. Involuntary turnover can happen for reasons such as:
- Poor candidate screening
- Inappropriate culture fit
- Low productivity
- Lack of necessary skills
- Inadequate resource planning

- Advertising: You'll need to pay to get your vacancy listed on job boards. For more senior positions, you might also advertise in specialist publications and websites. Writing a great job description can take time and often involves contributions from senior leaders.

That's if it's an unskilled worker on an hourly contract. When top performers leave an organization, the cost can rise to over 200% of annual salary.
